I love artists that aren't afraid to be in your face. I also love strong front-women, those who aren't apologetic about doing their thing and doing it exceptionally well. The ones putting on a show that's almost too real, too big and too personal. Where you walk out of the venue and say "wow, that made me a little uncomfortable, but, uh, ...more please?" Kaleido's Christina Chriss gets in your personal space with a deliciously fun, gritty performance. Unquestionably, it's the best thing that will happen to you all week.
These Detroit rockers are veritable veterans in the music world. They've six years under their belt, two stunning EPs and a full album, and an impressive resume of tours including repeat appearances at Vans Warped Tour, opening for Seether, Offspring, Chevelle, Evanescence, Kid Rock and a stint on Shiprocked. They're currently in the middle of an ambitious 44-day tour, playing almost every single day in different cities. They gleefully hint that there's much more in store.
Prior to their Austin set at Come And Take It Live, I head backstage with the band to talk about life, touring and musical comparisons. "There are a lot of people that try to pigeonhole us, or worse, force us into a direction." They go on to explain that their sound has been a natural progression, a product of their evolution as artists personally and collectively. It's heavy rock with a high-energy punk rock vibe and stunning vocals. Comparisons to Gwen Stefani and Maria Brink are inevitable. "It's a compliment really... both are incredible women and I think it's natural for people to compare us with what's familiar, what they know."
Single "My Enemy" is their latest, newly released. It takes a heavier sound and weightier themes; "Whether the ‘enemy’ is a person – a family member, someone you thought was your friend; addiction to drugs, alcohol; or you are your own worst enemy… This song comes from a place of finding the strength to recognize and rise above the control of the ‘enemy.’ "
We're almost ready for showtime, so I ask Christina what to expect. "Psychotic crazy eye contact from me; I want it to be an interactive, personal show. I'm gonna reach into you and touch your soul. Hope you don't have too much of a personal bubble." Kaleido's live show is deliciously, big, enthusiastic, personal and in-your-face. It's a treat to watch and a delight to photograph. Not a single other person in the crowd was any less impressed - the energy was palpable as their set wrapped up. Check out the remainder of their tour dates and be sure to favorite Kaleido on Spotify.
